Caribbean vs. Mexico vs. Maldives: Where Should You Go for Winter Sun?
So you've decided you need some sun this winter. Great! The only problem? Narrowing it down. The Caribbean, Mexico, and the Maldives are three very different answers to the same question, and the right one really depends on what kind of trip you're actually after.
Here's how we break it down.
If you want variety: Caribbean
Within the Caribbean are dozens of idyllic destinations, lending to both the beauty and the complication of it. There’s the laid-back rhythm of Barbados, the dramatic volcanic scenery of St. Lucia, the world class beaches of Anguilla. Winter is peak season here for good reason: December through April brings reliably dry, sunny weather across most of the islands, with temperatures sitting comfortably in the mid-to-high 20s.
It's the destination that works for almost everyone: families, couples, solo travellers who want a base with good food and easy access to the water. The flip side is that it can get busy, and "the Caribbean" requires a bit more research than people expect. Not all islands are created equal, and choosing the right one for you matters.
If you want culture with your sunshine: Mexico
Mexico tends to be overshadowed as a winter sun destination, but it really shouldn't be. The Riviera Maya delivers the beaches (think: turquoise water, white sand, the works), but what makes Mexico different is everything else around it. You're never far from a cenote, a Mayan ruin, or a town with genuinely great food and a market worth getting lost in.
Los Cabos is another strong option if you want something a little more polished. Its dramatic desert-meets-ocean scenery with excellent restaurants and a strong luxury hotel offering make it extra appealing. Winter weather across Mexico's coastal resorts is warm and mostly dry, without the intense heat of peak summer. It's a destination that rewards people who want to explore, not just switch off.
If you want to properly disconnect: Maldives
The Maldives is in its own category. It's not a destination you go to for variety, you go because you want to step completely off the grid, wake up over turquoise water, and do absolutely nothing at a very high standard.
The best time to visit is November through April, which puts it perfectly in the winter sun window. It's a longer journey from most places, but once you're there, that actually works in your favor — it keeps it from feeling overrun. This is the one for milestone trips, honeymoons, or anyone who needs to decompress.
So which is it?
Caribbean if you want flexibility and island-hopping options. Mexico if you want sun plus something to explore. Maldives if you want to disappear entirely.
All three deliver a memorable winter getaway. The rest is just a matter of knowing yourself. And if you're not sure which fits, that's exactly what we're here for.
